The Myth of "Always Low ISO"

For years, beginner photography advice has been dominated by a single mantra: keep your ISO as low as possible. This approach stems largely from traditional landscape photography, where photographers often rely on tripods, allowing for longer exposures. However, in fast-paced scenarios like street or wildlife photography, sticking to this rule can be counterproductive.

Many photographers fear ISO noise more than motion blur. Yet, as many professionals have noted, a sharp image with slight noise is almost always preferable to a blurry, soft shot caused by a shutter speed that is too slow.


Understanding Dual-Native ISO

Modern mirrorless cameras often feature sophisticated sensor technology known as dual-gain, dual-native, or dual-base ISO. To understand why this matters, we must clarify the terminology:

  • Native ISO: The range where the camera's analog signal is amplified.
  • Expanded ISO: Values outside the native range, which rely on digital boosting and significantly increase noise.
  • Base ISO: The value within the native range that provides the cleanest possible image quality.

Unlike conventional cameras with a single analog circuit, dual-native ISO cameras utilize two circuits. This provides two distinct base ISO points. For instance, if your camera has a base ISO of 64 and 800, shooting at ISO 640 might actually yield worse results than bumping up to ISO 800. At the second base ISO, you gain a faster shutter speed while maintaining—or even improving—image clarity.


Video-First Technology Entering Stills

While many manufacturers (like Nikon) have been subtle about advertising these features, this technology is common in both video and stills. For example, the Nikon Z9 utilizes base ISO 64 and 500 for stills, but shifts to 800 and 4000 when shooting in N-Log for video. Because videographers often have less room for error regarding noise, they have long relied on these technologies. Photographers, however, have historically had more options like long exposures or exposure stacking to manage dynamic range, which may explain why these sensor capabilities are less discussed in the photography community.


Advanced Tech: DGO and Triple-Base ISO

Beyond standard dual-native systems, there is Dual Gain Output (DGO). This technology captures two images simultaneously—one using a low-gain circuit for highlights and one using a high-gain circuit for shadows—and blends them for superior quality. Furthermore, innovations like the triple-base ISO found in the Canon EOS C400 push the boundaries even further by using three analog circuits to minimize noise even more effectively.
