Microsoft is rolling out a new initiative designed to assist players in transitioning their physical collections into the digital realm. The upcoming Disc-to-Digital feature will allow owners of Xbox One and Xbox Series X consoles to convert specific physical game discs into digital entitlements, eliminating the need to repurchase titles when migrating to newer hardware.
How the Feature Works
Starting August 31, the feature will be available for testing among Xbox Insiders. The program covers thousands of titles, though participation is ultimately at the discretion of individual game publishers. This means that while a vast portion of a user's library may be eligible, not every physical game will qualify for the conversion.
It is important to note that this is not a permanent conversion that allows you to discard your disc. As reported by industry sources, the digital license remains linked to the physical media. According to the system's design:
«The digital entitlement remains tied to the physical disc, so you can't simply turn a game into a permanent digital copy and then sell the disc while keeping the game.»
