Revisiting the Red Planet

It has been a quarter of a century since John Carpenter’s sci-fi horror film Ghosts of Mars debuted. While the movie depicts a future where the planet is 84% terraformed and populated by human mining colonies, it serves as a creative backdrop rather than a scientific roadmap. With a gritty aesthetic reminiscent of a futuristic Western, the film poses an intriguing question: how much progress have we actually made toward turning Mars into a second home?


The Terraform Barrier

According to Dr. Bruce Betts, Chief Scientist at the Planetary Society, large-scale terraforming remains a distant dream. He highlights that the lack of sufficient carbon dioxide on the planet is a critical "showstopper." Beyond the chemistry, the sheer economic and political burden makes such an endeavor nearly impossible.

«Any method I've ever heard of is really outrageously expensive over time, and you would have to have multi-year, multi-generational support for programs at a high level,» says Dr. Betts. He emphasizes that current research, including the 2018 study by Bruce Jakosky and Christopher Edwards, confirms that modern technology simply isn't equipped for the task.


Human and Environmental Constraints

Dr. Mark Gallaway, astronomer and founder of Starlight Planetarium, points out that the challenges are not just atmospheric, but biological and behavioral as well:

  • Physiological impact: We currently lack data on how human bodies function long-term under 0.38G gravity.
  • Psychological strain: Historical data from isolated habitats on Earth shows that enclosed environments often lead to intense conflict between inhabitants.
  • Soil toxicity: Recent findings indicate that Martian soil contains toxic elements that would make traditional agriculture, as seen in films like The Martian, impossible without importing massive amounts of topsoil.

Ethical Considerations and Earth's Example

Beyond the technical obstacles, there is an ethical dilemma. Author and astronomer Dr. Jeffrey Bennett questions the morality of fundamentally altering another planet's ecosystem. He argues that if humanity cannot effectively manage the climate crisis on Earth, we are likely not ready to terraform another world.

«Given that we can't even seem to keep Earth's climate functioning the way we'd like it to, I find it difficult to believe that our present level of knowledge would allow us to turn an inhospitable place like Mars into a livable world,» notes Dr. Bennett.


A Different Path Forward?

If terraforming a planet is too monumental a task, what is the alternative? Dr. Gallaway suggests looking toward orbital habitats instead. He advocates for repurposing M-type asteroids, which could be spun to simulate 1G gravity. This approach avoids the need to radically change a planet's atmosphere, focusing instead on creating controlled environments where humans can thrive. As the experts suggest, while Ghosts of Mars provides an entertaining look at our potential future, the real solution might lie in building our own structures in space rather than trying to transform a harsh, alien surface.
