The device was launched via a high-altitude balloon and plummeted toward the earth without any parachute or external safety protection. Over a 25-minute freefall, the handset endured temperatures ranging from -40 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit. Following a five-hour search mission, the recovery team retrieved the phone, which reportedly remained fully functional, capable of capturing photos and placing calls.
The Engineering Behind the Success
Preparing for this feat required a year of planning and a collaboration with an aerospace firm, totaling an investment of $500,000. While the stunt is impressive, experts note that the physics of the fall played a significant role. Due to the smartphone's low mass and high aerodynamic drag, it reached its terminal velocity relatively quickly. Therefore, the impact speed remained consistent regardless of the extreme starting altitude. Furthermore, the phone landed on a soft forest floor, which provided additional natural cushioning.
Advanced Protection Technology
Despite the favorable landing conditions, the engineering of the AirX case is noteworthy. It is constructed from thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) and features a 360-degree air-cushion chamber along with a specialized three-point compression structure known as ShockSpread.
According to internal company data, this technology is designed to significantly mitigate impact forces. The manufacturer claims that their testing showed the compression mechanism could reduce an impact of 4,000 grams down to 775 grams. The case reportedly withstood 24,000 tumble impacts during stress tests without suffering structural failure.
