Evolution of a System
Just two years after the debut of the original Capella system, Triangle has unveiled its successor: the Capella 2. While the company has taken the opportunity to refine both aesthetics and internal specifications, the core challenge remains—can this second-generation system command its place in an increasingly competitive market?
The system is currently available globally. In the UK, it is priced at £2299 (with optional S05 stands at £279), while US customers can expect a price tag of $2899 (stands at $329). Australian pricing is set at AU$6000, with stands at AU$325.
Technical Specifications and Connectivity
Triangle has opted to retain the proven driver array from the original model. This includes:
- Tweeter: A 25mm horn-loaded magnesium-aluminium alloy dome, featuring a phase plug for improved off-axis response.
- Mid/Bass Driver: A 165mm unit made from 100% natural cellulose pulp, supported by a vented aluminium chassis and a rubber-foam suspension.
The speakers continue to utilize 100 watts of Class D amplification each. The system still relies on an external streaming hub, which uses WiSA technology for 24bit/192kHz transmission with ultra-low latency (under 2.6m/s). However, this hub has been significantly upgraded to the 'Stereo Hub 2'.
Equipped with a new Cortex A53 processor, the hub now offers robust connectivity, including:
- Support for Spotify Lossless, Qobuz Connect, Tidal Connect, and UPnP.
- Roon Ready certification, plus AirPlay and Chromecast compatibility.
- Bluetooth 5.2 with aptX HD support.
- Expanded physical inputs: Ethernet, subwoofer pre-out, stereo RCAs, digital optical, coaxial, USB-A, USB-B, and HDMI eARC.
Performance and Sound Quality
One of the Capella 2's most appealing traits is its forgiving nature toward varying source quality. Whether playing high-resolution FLAC files or compressed streams, the system remains composed and disciplined. It produces a spacious, well-organized soundstage that feels much larger than the physical size of the cabinets would suggest.
Tonally, the system leans toward a neutral delivery. The high frequencies are well-balanced, avoiding harshness, while the midrange is articulated and clear. Despite a slight roll-off in the extreme low-end, the bass is punchy and rhythmically tight. As noted in the listening experience, the system maintains its character even at high volumes without sounding stressed or altered.
Design and Usability
Each speaker measures 38 x 20 x 32cm and features subtly curved vertical edges, which aid in soundwave dispersion and provide a modern look. Triangle has expanded its color options, moving beyond the original 'Space' white and 'Astral' blue to include 'Space' black, oak, and 'English' green.
The included remote control has also seen a significant upgrade: it is now crafted from aluminium, rechargeable via USB-C, and uses RF signals, eliminating the need for a direct line of sight. While the companion control app has a somewhat complex layout and requires managing separate apps for streaming services, it provides deep customization for:
«The app offers plenty of fine-tuning where speaker placement, frequency response, and subwoofer integration are concerned. Particularly good is the ability to run an automatic room calibration routine.»
Verdict
The Capella 2 is a tangible improvement over its predecessor, offering better functionality and a wider aesthetic range. While it faces stiff competition from established rivals like the KEF LS50 Wireless II or the Technics SC-CX700, the Triangle system makes a strong case for itself as a refined, neutral, and highly capable wireless audio solution.
