New Security Initiative for Higher Education

Malwarebytes has officially unveiled its Student Protection Program, providing eligible college and university students across the United States with two years of complimentary access to its Premium Security suite. The package allows users to safeguard up to three separate devices simultaneously.

Comprehensive Protection Features

Known primarily for its malware removal capabilities, the company has evolved into a comprehensive security provider. The Premium Security suite includes several critical layers of defense:

  • Real-time protection against malware and ransomware.
  • Advanced phishing and scam detection.
  • Integrated ad and tracker blocking.

According to security experts, the software is considered a highly reliable option for users managing a small number of devices. Whether students choose to protect a laptop, tablet, or smartphone, they have full flexibility in how they allocate these three licenses.

Eligibility and Enrollment

The program is currently restricted to students aged 18 and older who attend accredited US institutions. To participate, students must verify their status using a valid ".edu" or ".college" email address via the official Malwarebytes portal. While the initiative is currently US-exclusive, the company has indicated potential plans for international expansion in the future. For schools not yet supported, there is an option to request early access or take advantage of an alternative 50% discount offer.

Addressing Campus Security Risks

The rollout arrives just in time for the new academic year, a period often fraught with unique cybersecurity challenges. As students connect personal devices to unfamiliar campus networks and handle numerous emails regarding financial aid or IT alerts, the risk of falling victim to phishing or malware increases significantly.

As one industry expert noted regarding the necessity of such tools, «Equipping students with professional-grade security software helps mitigate the risks of a digital minefield during an already demanding academic transition.»

Post-Program Transition

Once the two-year promotional period expires, students have two main options. They can transition to a restricted free version of the software, which lacks premium features like automatic updates and real-time defense, or they may choose to enroll in a paid Premium subscription, currently priced at $60 per year.
