Unexpected Preorder Surge for Mortal Shell 2

As the gaming industry continues to embrace physical media, the upcoming souls-like title Mortal Shell 2 has encountered a major hurdle. The demand for the game’s physical PlayStation 5 edition has surpassed initial projections, leading to a complete sell-out of preorders at numerous retail locations well before the game's official August 20 release date.

Developer Acknowledges Inventory Struggles

The developers at Cold Symmetry, alongside publisher Playstack, addressed the situation via social media on July 16. They expressed regret that the high volume of interest outpaced the available manufacturing supply.

«We sincerely apologize if you were planning on preordering the Revered Edition and it is no longer available in your territory. Due to Mortal Shell II's release date of August 20, and the manufacturing time required to replenish stock, there is a very low chance of additional physical copies becoming available before the game's release,» the studio stated.

The team is currently coordinating with distribution partners to assess whether further production runs are feasible. However, they emphasized that there is no confirmed plan for restocking, as the final decision rests with the distributors rather than the studio itself.

Details on the Revered Edition and Alternatives

The supply issues are currently focused on the premium Revered Edition, priced at $70. This special package includes several collectible items, such as:

  • A collector's tuck-in box
  • A premium steelbook case
  • Exclusive fine art prints
  • A physical artbook

For those still looking to obtain a physical copy, the standard edition remains available for $50 at various retailers, though it does not include the aforementioned collector’s items.

About the Game

Mortal Shell 2 serves as a direct follow-up to the 2020 cult classic. The series is known for its unique «shell» mechanic, which allows players to inhabit different bodies to alter combat styles and narrative interactions. Players interested in getting a head start can access an open beta currently available on Steam. Completing the demo grants users a special «Flayed Harbinger» skin and the ability to skip the prologue when the full game launches later this summer.
