If it were possible to recapture the magic of playing a masterpiece for the first time, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time would be my top choice. Having spent two hours with an early access preview provided by Nintendo of Europe, I am confident that the upcoming 40th Anniversary remake for the Nintendo Switch 2 is the best way to experience this legendary quest anew.

A Visual Transformation

The first thing that strikes you is the visual presentation. The game is rendered in lush, vibrant greens and deep cerulean blues, creating a feast for the eyes. The art style has shifted toward a maximalist aesthetic, visible in everything from the intricate textures of Link’s tunic to the dense population of sprites and fairies within Kokiri Forest.

While some early online discussions criticized the new art style, experiencing it firsthand clarifies why this direction was chosen. The thematic contrast—the juxtaposition of whimsical beauty with darker elements—feels more pronounced here than ever before. With the addition of free camera movement, players can now fully appreciate the design of environments like Hyrule Castle Town Market, making the world feel more immersive and alive.

Refining the Gameplay and Audio

The developers have carefully balanced preservation with modernization. The core gameplay loop remains untouched, but it is supported by significant refinements:

  • Streamlined Menus: Navigating inventory is now more intuitive and efficient.
  • Enhanced Mobility: Improvements to combat, movement, and platforming make Link’s journey feel more fluid.
  • Updated Soundscape: The soundtrack features beautifully re-orchestrated themes and refreshed vocal effects.

Voice acting has also been expanded. While some performances, such as the Great Deku Tree, feel a bit different from the original tone, they add a new layer of depth to the narrative. Additionally, the introduction of "Fairy Messages" serves as a clever, optional hint system for discovering secrets, filling the gap left by the reduced frequency of Navi’s direct prompts.

Narrative Adjustments and Future Expectations

Fans familiar with the original might notice minor tweaks to story beats and dialogue, meant to clarify the lore and streamline translations. These changes are subtle but effective.

Looking ahead, there is significant potential for deeper changes in the game’s second half. As the author notes:

"It'll be interesting to see how Nintendo navigates the gritty, dark themes in the new world of game age ratings and its more squeaky-clean image."
Whether it’s the transformation of Zora’s Domain or the atmosphere of the Shadow Temple, fans are eager to see how the remake handles these iconic, darker segments.

Based on my time with the demo, this remake is an impressive ground-up reconstruction of a classic. Even for long-time veterans, this version offers a cohesive and polished experience that sets a new standard for the Hero of Time’s adventure. The full game is set to launch on November 5th.
