A New Collaboration in High-End Audio
The relationship between French speaker manufacturer Focal and its sister company, Naim Audio, has produced some impressive results in the past. Following the notable success of the Hekla system, the two brands are pushing boundaries further with their latest release: the Naim Mu-so Utopia. Positioned as a significantly more sophisticated and powerful successor, this new all-in-one wireless system aims to blend Naim’s acclaimed amplification pedigree with trickle-down acoustic technology from Focal’s flagship Utopia loudspeaker range.
Design, Build, and Connectivity
Retaining the signature design language of the Mu-so series, the Utopia features a brushed black anodized aluminum chassis highlighted by a distinct red trim. However, it is a substantial piece of equipment, weighing in at approximately 14kg. Prospective owners will need to ensure they have a sturdy support rack, especially if integrating it into a home cinema setup where placement relative to the television is critical.
The top interface remains consistent with the familiar Mu-so aesthetic, utilizing a backlit dial for volume control, input selection, and power management. Connectivity is comprehensive, featuring:
- HDMI eARC for seamless home cinema integration
- Optical input for digital sources
- RCA output for external subwoofer pairing
- Ethernet port for stable networking
Technical Specifications and Room Calibration
Under the hood, the system is quite a powerhouse, utilizing 720 watts of Class D and A/B amplification to drive 15 individual speaker units. This setup is designed to provide immersive sound in rooms up to 50m². Notably, the system incorporates two 25mm 'PRISM' tweeters—technically derived from Focal’s high-end Scala and Diva Utopia models—powered by Class A/B amplification to ensure greater precision in high-frequency reproduction.
Beyond hardware, the Utopia features advanced software tools, including the Focal & Naim app. This platform allows for detailed equalization and room calibration via Focal’s ADAPT (Adaptive Acoustic Personal Tuning) technology, which tailors the audio output to the specific acoustics of the listening environment.
Performance Impressions
In early demonstrations conducted at both Naim’s UK headquarters and Focal’s French facility, the system showcased a impressive ability to handle both music and cinematic audio. When tested with Dolby Atmos clips—such as scenes from Unbroken or Star Wars: Battlefront II—the unit displayed remarkable spatial accuracy and the capacity to fill a large 50m² space with authoritative sound.
Regarding its musical performance, the system proved adept at balancing power with texture, capturing delicate nuances in vocal tracks while maintaining scale during complex orchestral pieces. As noted during our listening sessions:
«The system demonstrated a notable ability to blend power and precision, giving shape and scale to arcing strings as they soared above percussive rhythms.»
While we noted some minor hardness in the mid-to-upper frequencies during high-volume playback of specific hip-hop tracks, it is possible this will smooth out after proper running-in time and final tuning refinements.
Verdict and Outlook
With a launch price of £4499 / $5500, the Mu-so Utopia is a significant investment that enters the market at a premium tier. While our initial impressions are optimistic, a definitive verdict will require extensive, independent testing in our own dedicated facilities. The combination of Focal’s acoustic engineering and Naim’s amplification heritage provides a strong foundation, and we look forward to a comprehensive review to determine if the performance justifies the significant price jump over existing models in the series.
