A new report reveals Google is developing an advanced facial recognition system called Project Toscana for Android and ChromeOS. According to Android Authority, the technology performed as well as Apple's Face ID on a test Pixel phone, even in various lighting conditions, without requiring larger display cutouts.
This could address a key weakness of current Android face unlock, which often struggles in low light. Google's system may use IR sensors to achieve Class 3 biometric security, allowing it to be used for secure actions like payments. However, Apple's Face ID uses a complex TrueDepth camera system that requires a large notch.
The author expresses concern that improved face unlock might lead Google to remove fingerprint sensors, as it did with the Pixel 4. While welcoming the upgrade, they argue that fingerprint sensors offer a faster, more consistent unlock method and that having both options is ideal for users.
