A Change in Direction

Significant, sweeping updates are coming to s&box, the successor to the legendary Garry's Mod. Following an April launch that was marred by poor user reviews, a flood of low-quality, AI-generated content, and a sharp decline in player retention, Facepunch Studios is drastically recalibrating its strategy.

Prioritizing the Player Experience

Garry Newman, the project's creator, candidly admitted that the team had focused too heavily on the underlying engine rather than the actual user experience. “Our focus has been on the engine and the development experience. That's what we love, that's what turns us on—but we're not selling an engine, we're selling a game,” Newman stated. He emphasized that the team will now prioritize the sandbox experience for players, promising the addition of more vehicles, NPCs, and deeper customization options to rectify previous shortcomings.

Abandoning the 'Netflix for Games' Model

One of the most notable admissions from Newman concerns the platform's discovery system. He acknowledged that the original strategy of offering a massive library of user-generated content—likened to a "Netflix for games"—has failed to provide a quality experience for players.

“My idea of a Netflix for games doesn't work. It's not feasible. It's not how people discover games. You can't land people on a menu of 60 games and say, 'have fun',” Newman explained.

To address the issue of discoverability and the influx of low-quality titles, Facepunch is implementing stricter curation. The platform will move to a "greenlight-style" system, requiring developers to apply for funding rather than distributing it based solely on volume. Newman noted, “Generally we want to discourage clickers, idler, slop and UI based games. We want to set the bar a bit higher than it has been set previously.”

Transition to Free-to-Play and Aesthetic Updates

In a move to increase accessibility, s&box is slated to become free-to-play well before the end of 2026. Current paid users will receive exclusive Steam inventory items as a form of compensation. Additionally, the iconic, sausage-like character model known as "The Citizen" or "Terry" is being retired from the default menu and avatar editor in favor of more traditional human models, marking a shift toward a more standard aesthetic for the platform.

While it remains to be seen if these updates can fully restore the spirit of the original Garry's Mod, this pivot toward human-led curation and improved gameplay quality represents a necessary evolution for the struggling platform.
