A Shift in Strategy Due to Security Concerns
Alliance Arts, the studio behind the upcoming horror drinking game Drunken Goddess Reflux, has officially canceled its scheduled public demo on Steam. Instead of a wide release, the developers plan to transition to private, invitation-only playtesting sessions.
The game, described as a form of "shot glass Russian roulette," pits players against an anime demon character with the goal of forcing her to "barf up her soul." Despite the unique premise and a mechanic that increases gameplay complexity as alcohol consumption progresses, the public will no longer get direct access to the files.
The Shadow of AI Replication
In a formal statement shared on X, the studio apologized for the sudden change of plans. Beyond the difficulty of enforcing content restrictions on streaming and video uploads, the developers expressed a deeper anxiety regarding the capabilities of modern technology:
«We're concerned that the demo's content could be used to quickly imitate or replicate the game's presentation and gameplay with AI or other tools, and that such works could be released before launch.»
The Growing Trend of Game Cloning
The fear of having creative work "vibe-cloned" is becoming a significant issue for indie developers. The industry has witnessed several instances where early prototypes or game concepts were copied and released by third parties within hours of being shared online.
While asset theft and cloning have been persistent issues in the mobile gaming market for years, the integration of AI tools has drastically accelerated the process. This development presents a dilemma for creators: while sharing concepts early is vital for building a community and market traction, it simultaneously exposes their work to opportunistic cloners.
As studios grow increasingly wary, there is mounting pressure on platforms like Steam to implement stronger protections against derivative copycats. Without such safeguards, more developers may choose to keep their projects behind closed doors until the very moment of launch.
