A New Milestone in Open-Source Firmware

Firmware specialist 3mdeb has reached a significant industry milestone with the official release of Dasharo v0.9.0. This marks the debut of the first open-source UEFI firmware designed specifically for AMD’s consumer-focused AM5 platform. The release brings initial compatibility for Zen 4 Phoenix APUs and is specifically tailored for the MSI Pro B850-P WiFi motherboard, leveraging the combined power of Coreboot and AMD’s open-source initialization library, openSIL.

Technical Capabilities and Implementation

The latest version of Dasharo includes a comprehensive list of 19 distinct features aimed at ensuring stable operation on the B850 board. Key functional additions include:

  • UEFI-compatible boot interface and Secure Boot support.
  • Support for fTPM and integrated Software Bill of Materials (SBOM).
  • Optimized boot processes, including fast boot and quiet boot options.
  • Real-time reporting for AMD CPU temperatures.

This development follows a months-long effort that began in February, building upon technical foundations established during the company's previous work on the server-grade Gigabyte MZ33-AR1 board for AMD EPYC 9005 processors.

Security and Future Outlook

The shift to open-source firmware is widely regarded as a major upgrade over traditional, closed-source AGESA solutions. By transitioning to openSIL, the architecture benefits from enhanced transparency and streamlined vulnerability tracking. As noted by industry experts, the open-source model allows a broader community of developers to audit code for security flaws, a task previously restricted to internal vendor teams.

«The move toward openSIL enables broader security auditing and flexibility, allowing for compatibility with alternative firmware ecosystems such as Coreboot, oreboot, and Project µ, while potentially offering improvements in system boot times,» the development documentation suggests.

While AMD plans to transition to openSIL natively starting with Zen 6, the Dasharo project is already proactively porting this technology to current Ryzen CPUs. Interested users can explore the new firmware via the MSI Pro B850-P hardware-firmware bundle currently available through the 3mdeb shop.
