A New Direction for Night City

Following recent updates regarding the development of a live-action project set in the Cyberpunk universe, CD Projekt Red has provided further clarity on what fans can expect. While excitement remains high, the studio has made it clear that this production will depart from traditional video game-to-film adaptation tropes.

Shifting from Game Adaptation

Michał Nowakowski, co-CEO of CD Projekt Red, recently explained the shift in strategy during an interview with the Polish outlet PAP Biznes. Following the expiration of their deal with Anonymous Content, the company has entered a new partnership with Paramount Pictures to pursue a "new formula" for the project.

«At this point, we can only say that we definitely don't want to make a film adaptation of the game. We want to tell a story in the world of Cyberpunk, but it won't be a one-to-one translation of the game's story,»

stated Nowakowski.

Why Original Stories Work Better

Moving away from the specific narrative of the game protagonist, V, is widely considered a prudent choice. The game already provides a complete arc, and attempting to compress it into a film format often invites negative comparisons. The expansive setting of Night City offers a rich foundation for entirely new stories that can exist independently while still feeling authentic to the source material.

Lessons from Past Successes

This approach aligns with successful adaptations like Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, which flourished by utilizing the existing lore to tell a standalone tale. By operating within the framework established by Mike Pondsmith’s original tabletop setting rather than being bound to the game's specific plot, creators have the freedom to craft more compelling narratives.

While a timeline for the live-action film remains unknown, fans of the franchise have something to look forward to soon: Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 is scheduled for its Netflix premiere on October 20.
