Apple has introduced its latest Mac mini range, offering users a choice between the all-new M6 chip and the high-performance M5 Pro. This generation prioritizes overall system speed and, crucially, the ability to execute AI models directly on the machine.
The base model, equipped with the M6 chip, represents a significant leap for AI enthusiasts. According to official data, the M6-powered Mac mini delivers up to 4x faster AI performance, 2x improvements in storage and graphics speed, and a 40% boost in CPU power. Meanwhile, the M5 Pro variant is positioned for heavy lifting, offering 4x faster LLM prompt processing in LM Studio, and reaching performance levels 8.5x higher than the previous M2 Pro chip.
Connectivity and Design Innovations
Both new models maintain the compact, redesigned form factor introduced with the M4 generation. The front of each device houses two USB-C ports and a dedicated headphone jack. However, rear connectivity differs significantly:
- Mac mini with M6: Retains three Thunderbolt 4 ports.
- Mac mini with M5 Pro: Features three high-speed Thunderbolt 5 ports, capable of 120Gb/s throughput.
The implementation of Thunderbolt 5 on the Pro model allows for advanced setups, including the ability to cluster multiple Mac mini systems to handle massive local AI models. Additionally, both models now feature Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 support for improved latency, range, and power efficiency.
Professional Capabilities and AI Integration
The Mac mini with M5 Pro is aimed squarely at professionals. With up to an 18-core CPU and a 20-core GPU, it provides the horsepower needed for video rendering, app development, and scientific simulations. It also introduces third-generation ray tracing for enhanced 3D design and visual effects. Both models now support a new feature called "genlock" via USB-C, which provides precise synchronization between displays and cameras, such as the iPhone 17 Pro.
Regarding storage, Apple has transitioned to a next-generation SSD architecture based on PCIe Gen 6. The company claims this shift results in performance up to 2x faster than previous iterations, significantly accelerating file transfers and project loading times.
