YouTube has responded to user feedback by adding two highly requested features to its Premium Lite subscription tier. As of February 24th, background play and offline downloads are now available for Premium Lite subscribers.
The plan, positioned as a more affordable, ad-free alternative to the full YouTube Premium, had previously faced criticism for lacking these essential functionalities. The absence of background play meant videos stopped when users switched apps, while no offline downloads limited viewing in areas with poor connectivity.
YouTube expanded the Premium Lite pilot to more countries last year and subsequently received significant user demand for these features. It's important to note that music videos and YouTube Music content remain exclusive to the full Premium subscription.
The update represents a meaningful upgrade for users primarily watching standard video content. The new features are rolling out now and will reach all Premium Lite markets over the coming weeks.
