Sigma’s Forthcoming Prime
During the China P&E trade show, which concluded on May 18, Sigma showcased a prototype of its highly anticipated 85mm f/1.2 full-frame autofocus lens. This optics piece completes the company's trio of professional DG Art f/1.2 primes, joining the existing 35mm and 50mm models designed for Sony E-mount and L-mount systems. The lens is officially slated for a September release.
The Viltrox Challenge
However, the photography market is witnessing a significant shift. While Sigma was finalizing its design, Viltrox had already announced its own LAB 85mm f/1.2 prime for Sony E-mount and Nikon Z-mount systems. This move suggests that Sigma is feeling the heat from emerging manufacturers.
Viltrox has been aggressively expanding its premium LAB lineup. According to market observations, the brand represents a genuine threat to established industry giants like Sigma and Tamron. The primary factors driving this potential disruption include:
- Price Advantage: Viltrox LAB-series lenses typically retail for approximately $500 less than their Sigma DG Art counterparts.
- Build Quality: Viltrox has transitioned to premium all-metal aluminum-alloy construction, challenging the hybrid metal-and-plastic designs often found in competitor lineups.
Technical Expectations and Future Outlook
While technical specifications for both 85mm lenses remain largely under wraps, we can infer their performance based on previous releases. Sigma is set to utilize its proprietary High-response Linear Actuator (HLA) motor, known for its silent and precise performance. Viltrox, conversely, has leaned into a "vintage vibe" branding, emphasizing artistic rendering over raw technical data.
"If the forthcoming Sigma and Viltrox 85mm lenses follow the same design philosophies as their sibling lenses, there may be very little separating them in real-world performance," analysts note. Should Viltrox eventually introduce a 50mm f/1.2 to complement its 85mm offering, it could significantly alter the market landscape.
While Sigma may continue to lead in the high-quality zoom category, Viltrox is carving out a formidable niche in the fast-prime segment. As both companies gear up for their respective product launches, the primary beneficiary will be the consumer, who now has more high-performance, cost-effective options than ever before.
