Tecno has unveiled an intriguing Modular Phone concept at MWC 2026, a sleek 4.9mm-thin device that recalls the ambitious but ultimately unsuccessful modular phone experiments from companies like Google, LG, and Motorola.

The concept features eight magnetic zones on its back for attaching accessories. Tecno demonstrated a range of modules, including a telephoto lens extender, a microphone, a speaker, a selfie light, a connection-boosting antenna, and a remarkably slim 3,000mAh battery pack. Multiple modules can be connected simultaneously using Tecno's proprietary magnetic technology.

While the functional prototype allowed hands-on testing, the experience highlighted practical hurdles. The telephoto lens module was notably heavy and prone to detaching, and wireless viewfinder connectivity suffered from lag. Historically, modular phones have struggled with high costs and limited consumer appeal, as the expense and practicality of carrying accessories often outweigh the benefits.

Despite its cool factor and technical showcase, the Tecno Modular Phone remains a concept with little chance of commercial release, underscoring the persistent market challenges for modular designs.
