A New Direction for Stealth
The stealth genre has long felt stagnant, often relying on tired mechanics or excessive combat-focused gameplay. However, a unique title titled My Arms Are Longer Now promises to revitalize the genre with its blend of physics-driven absurdity and classic thievery. Developed by Toot Games and chosen as the first externally published project by Jackbox Games, this title stands out by prioritizing humor alongside traditional sneaking mechanics.
Physics-Based Hijinks
During a hands-on demo at PAX Australia, the game demonstrated a refreshing approach to stealth. Players navigate environments using an unsettling, highly flexible limb that can be twisted and stretched to reach targets. The core gameplay loop involves navigating train carriages and public spaces to pilfer items—such as bicycles—right from under the noses of unsuspecting NPCs.
The comedy stems not just from the slapstick visuals of the protagonist’s movement, but from the mechanical tension of avoiding detection. Witnesses are observant, and a persistent detective tracks your peculiar criminal activity, ensuring that the "stealth" part of the comedy-stealth equation remains challenging.
The Team Behind the Chaos
This project marks a significant milestone for Jackbox Games, known globally for their party game collections. By partnering with Toot Games—a studio established by Matthew Jackson and Millie Holten—Jackbox is branching out into third-party publishing. The developers bring a distinct creative background, having previously worked on projects like the Trope RPG and the web series Long Head.
Why the Genre Needs This
Many modern stealth games struggle to evolve, often feeling like shadows of 90s classics like Thief: The Dark Project. While many developers attempt to innovate by simply adding multiplayer features or turning stealth segments into mass combat sequences, My Arms Are Longer Now opts for a more creative, character-driven approach. It promises to offer a distinct experience for those weary of conventional genre tropes. The game is scheduled to launch later this year and is currently available to wishlist on Steam.
