End of an Era for Virtual Meetings

Microsoft has confirmed that its popular 'Together mode' feature for Teams will be officially retired on June 30. This change marks the end of a feature that defined the remote work experience during the height of the global pandemic.

The Shift in Remote Collaboration

Launched in 2020, Together mode was designed to combat the feelings of isolation and digital fatigue inherent in virtual meetings by placing participants into a shared virtual environment. The goal was to make remote interactions feel more organic and communal.

However, the workspace landscape has evolved significantly over the past few years. With many organizations adopting return-to-office mandates and Teams integrating more robust alternatives—such as the expanded gallery view—the need for a specialized virtual auditorium setting has diminished.

Reasoning Behind the Change

According to an official announcement, Microsoft is removing the feature to simplify the user experience. By streamlining the interface, the company aims to reduce cognitive load and technical fragmentation across different devices. Microsoft stated:

«A simplified meeting interface should reduce clicks, make meetings run smoother, and lead to faster innovation.»

What Happens Next?

Following the June 30 update, several associated features will also be removed, including custom scene settings and seat assignment tools. Users are encouraged to switch to branded backgrounds for a professional touch. To maintain focus during meetings, Microsoft suggests utilizing existing features such as:

  • Pinning key speakers to the screen.
  • Spotlighting active presenters.
  • Using multi-display configurations for better visibility.

While the virtual auditorium is being retired, the core functionality of Teams remains focused on facilitating communication. Although the novelty of the feature will be missed by those who enjoyed themed virtual settings, the focus is now shifting toward stability and faster performance for all types of meetings.
