Greater Flexibility for the Windows 11 Taskbar
Microsoft has signaled a shift in its development strategy, focusing on refining core user experiences and functional customization rather than prioritizing AI-driven features. A primary example of this initiative is the upcoming update for Windows 11, which significantly expands how users can configure their taskbar and Start menu.
In a recent announcement, the company highlighted its goal of making the operating system more personal. The most notable change is the restoration of the ability to dock the taskbar on any edge of the screen—top, bottom, left, or right. Furthermore, users will gain more control over icon alignment:
«top-aligned or centered when the taskbar is on the left or right, and left-aligned or centered when the taskbar is on the top or bottom».
This functionality brings back a popular feature that was absent at the launch of Windows 11. Additionally, users opting for a vertical orientation will have the choice between a compact bar or a wider version that displays full labels for active applications. Microsoft is also introducing a new, extra-slim taskbar mode, designed specifically to optimize screen real estate on devices with lower resolutions.
Refining the Start Menu Experience
Beyond the taskbar, Microsoft is introducing several interface improvements to the Start menu. These updates focus on both user control and data relevance. New section-level toggles will allow users to independently display or hide the "Pinned," "Recommended," and "All apps" areas. Additionally, users can now adjust the physical size of the Start menu and hide their profile information for increased privacy.
To improve usability, the "Recommended" section is being rebranded as "Recent." According to the company, this label is more accurate, as the area focuses on recently opened files and newly installed software. Microsoft also noted: We are refining which files appear and how they are ordered to reduce less relevant items and better reflect what you have been working on

Availability
These features are currently in the development phase. Microsoft stated that Windows Insiders enrolled in the Experimental channel will be the first to receive these updates in the coming weeks. While an official timeline for the general public release has not been confirmed, it is expected that these features will roll out to all users in the near future.
