A New Way to Engage in Communities

Meta has unveiled a new standalone application named Forum, which reconfigures the Facebook Groups experience into a platform reminiscent of Reddit’s discussion-oriented interface. The app’s appearance in the App Store was initially spotted by social media consultant Matt Navarra.

Syncing and Privacy Features

By logging into Forum with their existing Facebook credentials, users can seamlessly access their groups, personal profiles, and historical activity. While the application supports anonymous posting, it is worth noting that group administrators retain the ability to view a user's authentic identity. Content shared via Forum is automatically cross-posted to the corresponding Facebook Group, ensuring that discussions remain synchronized across both platforms.

Focused Feed and AI Capabilities

Unlike the traditional Facebook feed, which mixes posts from friends, followed pages, and algorithmic suggestions, Forum is designed specifically for group interactions. Upon first use, the application asks users to define their content preferences, allowing it to surface relevant discussions from communities beyond those a user has already joined.

The app also integrates two key AI-driven tools:

  • Ask: This feature compiles information from various group threads, allowing users to find answers without needing to navigate through multiple individual discussions.
  • Admin Tools: These AI-powered utilities are designed to streamline the management and moderation of group communities.

Meta’s Strategic Direction

A representative for Meta confirmed that the product is currently in the testing phase, noting that the company frequently experiments with new applications to gauge user interest. This is not the company’s first attempt at a standalone groups app, as a similar project was launched in 2014 before being phased out in 2017.

The release of Forum aligns with CEO Mark Zuckerberg's recent emphasis on rapid product development, fueled by AI-driven efficiencies. Following the release of the ephemeral photo-sharing app Instants, Meta continues to prioritize new ventures while simultaneously restructuring its workforce to focus more heavily on artificial intelligence, with significant capital expenditure planned for the coming years.
