Escura Camera, known for the SnapRoll keychain camera, has unveiled an unusual device called LIGAR. This compact digital camera attaches to any film camera's hotshoe and fires off a digital image every time you take a photo on film.
The 12MP, 40g device synchronizes with the film camera's shutter, using it to trigger both cameras simultaneously. Packed into a tiny 48mm cube, it can also function as a standalone camera. The LIGAR features a 3.2mm f/2.8 lens with a wide-angle adapter and 5x zoom, achieving a focal length equivalent up to 105mm on a full-frame camera.
While innovative for solving the frustration of ruined film shots, the camera has limitations. It shoots only JPEGs and 2K 30fps video in a square format. Its technical specs may not attract serious photographers, nor does it have the vintage aesthetic appeal of other popular compact cameras.
Currently seeking funding on Kickstarter with an early bird price of $125, the LIGAR is a niche device. It may not take the market by storm, but it could inspire major manufacturers to incorporate similar hybrid functionality into future film camera models.
