Workforce Reduction at Night Street Games

Last Flag studio, Night Street Games, has officially confirmed a significant reduction in its staff. Executive producer Jonathan Jelinek first indicated that staffing changes were on the horizon, and CEO Mac Reynolds has since verified that approximately 12 employees have been laid off. Moving forward, the studio will retain a core team of 13 developers to focus on new creative ventures.

The Challenges of Finding an Audience

The studio, co-founded by Mac and Dan Reynolds of the band Imagine Dragons, initially generated attention for its unique pedigree and the solid gameplay mechanics of its CTF-focused shooter. However, despite positive critical reception, the title faced persistent difficulties in building and maintaining a sustainable player base.

In April, the development team attempted to boost engagement by making the game free-to-play on weekends. Unfortunately, these efforts fell short of expectations. The studio noted that their current player numbers were insufficient to justify long-term development beyond the patches that were already in the pipeline.

Empowering the Community

Despite the layoffs, Night Street Games remains dedicated to supporting the existing community. Mac Reynolds expressed his appreciation for the team's hard work, stating:

«Game development is an inherently risky business, and it's not lost on us what it means to take a chance on something you believe in.»

To conclude the game's active development cycle, the studio has promised several upcoming updates, including:

  • New character additions
  • Additional maps and game modes
  • New cosmetic items
  • Tools allowing players to host lobbies with custom rulesets

By implementing these features, the studio aims to transition the control of the game's environment to its users. Once these final updates are implemented, the remaining 13-person team will shift their focus toward new projects, with further announcements expected in the future.
