A New Level of UI Control

The introduction of the Liquid Glass aesthetic in iOS 26 marked the most significant interface overhaul since the seventh iteration of the operating system. While the design brought a modern look with transparent elements and light-refraction effects, it faced immediate backlash due to readability issues in core features like the Control Center and the Music app. After several iterations of trial and error in iOS 26, Apple has finally implemented a comprehensive solution in the first developer beta of iOS 27: a dedicated translucency slider.

Refining the Liquid Glass Experience

During the WWDC 2026 keynote, Apple representatives noted that they have carefully integrated user and developer feedback to evolve the Liquid Glass language. The company stated:

“We have tuned Liquid Glass so it diffuses complex content behind it much more effectively, while also creating more depth and separation.”

Beyond the enhanced default behavior, the new slider provides users with precise control over their preferred level of transparency. This functionality mirrors the adjustment tools previously introduced for the Lock Screen clock, offering a personalized balance between aesthetic clarity and functional legibility.

Expanded Customization on iPad and Mac

This design philosophy extends to iPadOS 27 and macOS, where users benefit from a similar customization interface. The settings menu now includes a dynamic, scrollable preview window, allowing users to visualize how transparency adjustments impact the readability of their specific home screen layout. From fully tinted to ultra-clear, the system allows for a tailored visual experience across different device form factors.

Enhancing App Icon Clarity

In addition to interface transparency, Apple has resolved concerns regarding icon fidelity. In the previous version, some icons suffered from a blurry appearance caused by the layering effects of Liquid Glass. iOS 27 rectifies this by incorporating distinct layers for app icons, resulting in a crisper, more defined look. While the transparency of icons is not individually adjustable, users can choose between 'Clear' and 'Tinted' presets via the Home Screen edit menu, ensuring that iconography remains sharp regardless of the chosen theme.
