Call of Duty developers have addressed rumors about a secret standalone Zombies game in development at the studio. Their response came a few hours after the news went viral on social media, with many players having mixed reactions.

On February 23, Dexerto reported that a rumored Call of Duty standalone Zombies game is in the works. The post read, “A standalone Call of Duty Zombies title is reportedly being planned for next-gen consoles. The title is said to debut alongside a separate multiplayer entry.” The post went viral, garnering over 1 million views within a day.

This prompted Call of Duty’s official X account to respond with: “The rumor factory is working overtime. This ain’t it.” Ever since, fans have had mixed reactions. Some criticized the potential standalone game, suggesting the studio was trying to charge more for a mode already in the base game. Others said the decision was long overdue.

Criticism continued even after the denial. Some fans argued a standalone Zombies game is what they want, while one fan criticized the drop in game quality after Jason Blundell’s departure. Zombies is a survival mode first appearing in Call of Duty: World at War.

After Black Ops 7 received poor reception, the developer announced it would no longer aim for back-to-back releases. A new rumor suggests the 2026 release could be Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 by Infinity Ward.
